Today another important step for ETIM MC (Modelling Classification) was taken. We are happy to announce the ETIM MC Guidelines version 2.0 have now been officially been published and are available for download. The updated document has been restructured, gained increased clarity, removed redundancies, updated with new rules and guidelines aligned with future developments and use cases of the standard.
Broadened scope
This major update aims to improve the overall quality, implementability and stability of the standard. The scope of the geometrical standard has been clarified, not limiting it only for BIM use cases but as a standard for geometrical data for multiple use cases.
Result of extensive collaboration and governance
The creation of this new set of documentation is the result of extensive collaboration within the Technical Committee of ETIM MC. Benjamin Sjölander, the convenor of this committee, has gathered feedback, knowledge and experience that significantly contributes with helping the implementation of ETIM MC. ETIM International would like to thank our members and the MC Technical Committee for their commitment and contribution in this process.
Key Changes
Changed release process while maintaining flexibility
ETIM MC will adopt the same release process as the ETIM Product Classification, a bi-annual release cycle, starting with ETIM 11 and expected release of ETIM MC in early 2027. All changes made during a two year period will collectively be released at once in close connection to the release of the ETIM Product Classification. Those who can’t wait for changes to become effective in the next release can fall back to the dynamic release. This is a state of ETIM MC consisting of the current release, supplemented with all approved and processed change requests and added new classes.
This procedural change improves the stability of the standard, simplifies the linking between product classes and modelling classes, allows engineers to specify LOIN provisions (level of information need) in engineering contracts, by referring to a specific ETIM MC release.
Introducing clearance spaces
Based on market needs, ETIM MC now introduces two types of spaces in the standard: Installation space and Functional space.
These spaces are based on ISO 16757-2 with adjustments to fit the scope, purpose and need of ETIM MC.
Both spaces define the required three-dimensional zones around a product that is needed for installation, operation, maintenance and safety.

Updated drawing guidelines
Probably the part that the staff office is most proud of is the complete overhaul of the drawing guidelines. The new convention includes a lot of changes and clarifications like new standardised drawing code rules, changed indication of optional dimensions and line styles.
With this update, increased alignments with several external standards are made while keeping focus on the standards core need and scope.

Standardised naming convention
A new standardised class name structure has been developed that focus on: object type, functional role, context, installation/mounting, form/variant. This allows for clear identification of what a specific Modelling Classes represents in a standardised way.
Next steps
The implementation of the all new guidelines will be done gradually with the goal of maintaining stability while targeting to implement all new conventions on all Modelling Classes over time.
An important step will be the full adoption of the Connection Type Classes in all relevant Modelling Classes and updating all Modelling Classes to the new naming convention.
The new release scheme will be implemented following the release of ETIM 11. We are confident that this new release will sustain and likely increase the current momentum of adoption of the ETIM MC standard.
ETIM International will continue to evolve the standard aligned with market needs. If you are an ETIM member and wish to propose improvements or changes, please contact your local ETIM office.
If you are not an ETIM member and want help with adoption or would like to learn more about how to get involved, contact ETIM International at info@etim-international.com.
